The lecture was on the role of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) in the national and regional economy, and the challenges being encountered. Dr. Munyanyiwa elaborated ZTA’s role within the Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy (NDS1 transitioning to NDS2), and the Tourism Act. He highlighted the significance of the heritage-based tourism and the cluster approach in boosting economic activity, indicating the sector’s contribution of 12 percent growth to the national GDP in 2024, with receipts rising to USD 1.2 billion from USD 1.16 billion in 2023.
The Secretary also stated the challenges being faced such as the recent U.S. travel ban, strict visa requirements, negative perceptions in some markets, and limited direct connectivity to long-haul destinations. He stressed the need for stakeholder collaboration in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and Africa at large to address these issues and harness tourism’s potential for sustainable development. Participants were drawn from Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal and Siera Leon.
