Makanaka Ganyaupfu is set to represent the country at the world culinary competition

19-year-old Makanaka Ganyaupfu is set to represent the country at the world culinary competition, the 10th Young Chef Olympiad, set for Delhi, India, next week.International Institute of Hotel Management’s YOUNG CHEF OLYMPIAD 2024 is a unique competition event being held for the tenth time since its inception in 2015. Under the auspices of the International Hospitality Council, the competition is organised by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), a part of the Indismart Group which is a large conglomerate that operates the IndiSmart Hotels and offers a wide range of services in the field of Hospitality Management Education Training and Consultancy in India and South East Asia.Participants will be be vying for the prestigious Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals- the Dr Suborno Bose Challenge as well as several other awards.

This year, S.A.H.T.C.-The Hospitality School has selected one of our first year Commis chefs, Makanaka N. Ganyaupfu to represent the school and the country. Makanaka came first in a tight contest that also saw Jerry Mavhusa and Kumbirai Muzhira come up as runner ups. Makanaka will be accompanied by her Mentor, Mutsawashe Olinda Mvududu. The team is really excited to be venturing into this realm of World Class competitions is ready to take on the giants in the Culinary Industry. This is the 7th year the school is participating in this competition. Past participants are Tadiwa Tendayi, the late Takudzwa Matinenga, Tinotenda Mutamba, Walter Maseko, Tafadzwa Siyanga and Eliasaph Chipare.

The world’s Tenth Young Chef Olympiad is being held between Monday,29th January and Monday, 5th of February 2024 throughout five great cities of India – Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata – and in Goa. Zimbabwe has been placed in Group C alongside other countries such as Singapore, England, Indonesia, Madagascar, Netherlands, Seychelles,Uzbekistan,Uganda and Bangladesh. The Grand Opening Ceremony takes place in Delhi on Monday, the 29th January. The First round of the competition will take place over the next 2 days with competitors being split into groups and competing in Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Goa. Following Round 1, all the competitors and mentors will be flown to the cultural city of Kolkata for the final stage. The leading 10 competitors from Round 1 will compete in the Grand Final. The next 10 competitors filling the 11th to 20th. positions will compete for the Plate Trophy and the remaining competitors will take part in the Dr. Bose Challenge. This competition brings the giants in the Culinary Arts world including David Foskett and Neil Rippington who are renowned authors and culinarians.
The 2019 YCO competition saw our school representative walking way with the Rising Star Award and our 2023 representative clinched the Award for the Best in Kitchen Hygiene!
