Masvingo Province | Amai’s Traditional Cook-Out Competition 2026

In 2025, Tourism contributed 10% to Zimbabwe’s GDP growth, with the Culture and Heritage Cluster through Gastronomy Tourism emerging as a key pillar driving this success. Through platforms such as the Amai’s Traditional Cook-Out Competitions which was held in Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe is steadily positioning itself as a vibrant food storytelling destination. The competition brought together a diverse mix of contestants, including Community Members, Persons with Disabilities, Tertiary Students and Professional Chefs, reflecting a strong and intentional focus on Inclusivity across the entire Tourism value chain.
The event which was officiated by the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi, is a flagship initiative launched in 2019 by the Patron of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Her Excellency the First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa. It continues to showcase Zimbabwe’s rich Culinary Heritage while promoting innovation, medicinal … with unique offerings such as Wezhira wine adding depth to the country’s Gastronomy identity. Anchored on His Excellency President Cde. Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind, the initiative has become a vital source of income, especially for marginalised groups, while advancing inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities towards achieving an upper middle income society by 2030.
Through a Whole-of-Government Approach, Gastronomy Tourism is being institutionalised as a Sustainable driver of Economic growth. Its impact is evident, with many past contestants establishing successful businesses and restaurants, while others are now shaping the future of the sector as lecturers in Culinary programmes, demonstrating the transformative power of Tourism beyond participation into long-term empowerment.
