A Fusion of Gastronomy Tourism and Religious Tourism

A dynamic tapestry of faith and flavor unfolded at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfields, as the Johanne Masowe eChishanu Amai’s Traditional Cookout Competition commenced under the theme “Moto weChitendero, Chikafu Chetsika Dzedu.” Representing the Patron of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Her Excellency The First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi, delivered a compelling address to over 10 000 congregants, celebrating the church’s embrace of Gastronomy as a powerful vehicle for Cultural preservation and Economic empowerment. She applauded the First Lady globally recognised as the “Queen of Gastronomy” for spearheading a transformative National movement that is revitalising Zimbabwe cuisine, strengthening family nutrition and integrating communities into the mainstream economy in line with the President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030. Minister Rwodzi underscored Zimbabwe’s growing global appeal, including recognition by Forbes as a World’s Number One Must-Visit destination, attributing this to a Heritage-Based Tourism approach anchored on Culture, Nature and Community participation. She highlighted Gastronomy as a bridge between Religious and Tourism experiences, urging congregants to commercialise their culinary talents through canteens at church gatherings, thereby enhancing livelihoods and strengthening the Tourism value chain. A total of 40 contestants from Community, Youth and Persons with Disabilities categories showcased an array of traditional dishes ranging from sadza rezviyo and road runner chicken to madora, zvinyenze and magaka eminzwa each reflecting Zimbabwe’s rich Culinary identity. The event exemplified the seamless fusion of Gastronomy, Religious and Domestic Tourism, reinforcing Zimbabwe’s positioning as a culturally rich and inclusive destination. Winners from today’s competition will proceed to the National finals set for 25 May 2026 in Midlands Province. #JohanneMasoweeChishanu
